News:

Superhero Rampage: 4/21 at 8pm during the Codeathon dinner

4/17:  At the designathon this past Saturday, we had 14 designers work on five projects (that I am aware of) -- a consensus wiki, accessible survey tool, constituent relationship management tool, time bank, and entity-based open social network.  The Projects page has some details, and will be updated as the week progresses.

A good time was had by all -- software designed, ideas inspired, and a gourmet meal cooked by Wednesday Night Dinners consumed in the evening.  Thanks to everyone who attended and helped organize!

4/12:  We just submitted stories to Digg and Reddit about the event.  Hop on over and give us a vote!

4/12:  A reminder that the designathon and the codeathon are both "bring your own laptop" events.  Please ask for help if you need a loaner!

4/11:  I wanted to put out a thank you to Mozilla for sponsoring us!  They've made a cash donation which will cover many of the costs of the event and our entertainment.

4/11:  T minus 3 days until the designathon!  Doryan, our food and entertainment coordinator, will be hosting the afterparty at his residence and providing dinner and drinks -- details are on the designathon logistics page.  Codeathon participants are welcome to attend and meet their designer counterparts!

4/11:  Our food and entertainment schedule for the codeathon is starting to solidify -- check out the wiki page for more info.  Saturday's dinner will feature a superhero rampage, with special guests arriving to help our coders in their world-saving endeavors :-)

Note that the 4/20 kickoff party at Triumph Cafe has been moved from 8-11p to 7-10p.

About the Events:

Designathon/Codeathon 2.0 is the second in a series of volunteer events to help build usable and accessible Web 2.0 tools for non-profit organizations!

All of our development will be open source, and built for general use by non-profit organizations (as opposed to being custom-built for a specific organization).

These will be productive but fun events, with some unique food and entertainment provided to keep things interesting.  This is a great way to spend time with a lot of other smart, interesting techies while putting your skills towards something good in the world!  A first successful codeathon was thrown in October -- you can see videos from the event on YouTube (thanks Kai!).

The designathon will take place on April 14th, laying groundwork in terms of functional, UI, and technical design.  The codeathon will take place April 21st-22nd, at which programmers will implement designs created at the designathon, or other designs of their own choosing.

You can find out additional details using the "SideBar" navigation menu to the right.

What will be accomplished?

Quite a bit!

Between the 8-hour designathon and the 30-hour codeathon, that's almost 40 hours of software development effort -- the equivalent of one full-time workweek.  With multiple people collaborating, each project can receive a few man-weeks of effort, which is a substantial amount of time.

Some small projects may actually be completed in this timeframe.  Obviously this isn't enough time to build and polish a larger software project -- but it is enough time to form a team and generate momentum and motivation.  We will provide web tools to facilitate ongoing collaboration on projects, encouraging codeathon participants (or other future volunteers) to continue them.

At the last codeathon, we made substantial progress on a number of projects.  These are listed on the previous codeathon's wiki.
