News:

 

4/4:  We've decided to scale back the designathon from a two-day event to a one-day event.  The designathon concept is an experiement in progress, and the cost of a two-day event felt excessive for the number of signups we've been getting. 

 

We still have a strong contingent of designers signed up, and expect to see (as we saw with the previous codeathon) many more signups the week before.  The event may be smaller and less formal, but it will still be fun and it will still be effective!  We are looking forward to seeing all of you on the day of the 14th.  Additional details are available on the logistics page.

 

We've also moved the kickoff party from Friday 4/13 to Friday 4/20, before the codeathon.  Location TBD.

 

3/31:  I have added info about several League of Technical Voters projects which Silona hopes to make progress on at the codeathon.  These are cool projects in their own right -- social networking, reputation systems, etc. -- but they also help move the League closer to its goals of helping techies have more influence in the political process.  Read more on the Proposed Projects page.  -- jhogan

About the Events:

Designathon/Codeathon 2.0 is the second in a series of volunteer events to help build usable and accessible Web 2.0 tools for non-profit organizations!

 

All of our development will be open source, and built for general use by non-profit organizations (as opposed to being custom-built for a specific organization).

 

These will be productive but fun events, with some unique food and entertainment provided to keep things interesting.  This is a great way to spend time with a lot of other smart, interesting techies while putting your skills towards something good in the world!  A first successful codeathon was thrown in October -- you can see videos from the event on YouTube (thanks Kai!).

 

The designathon will take place on April 14th, laying groundwork in terms of functional, UI, and technical design.  The codeathon will take place April 21st-22nd, at which programmers will implement designs created at the designathon, or other designs of their own choosing.

What will be accomplished?

Quite a bit!

 

Between the 8-hour designathon and the 30-hour codeathon, that's almost 40 hours of software development effort -- the equivalent of one full-time workweek.  With multiple people collaborating, each project can receive a few man-weeks of effort, which is a substantial amount of time.

 

Some small projects may actually be completed in this timeframe.  Obviously this isn't enough time to build and polish a larger software project -- but it is enough time to form a team and generate momentum and motivation.  We will provide web tools to facilitate ongoing collaboration on projects, encouraging codeathon participants (or other future volunteers) to continue them.

 

At the last codeathon, we made substantial progress on a number of projects.  These are listed on the previous codeathon's wiki.
